Hi mamas! Did you know that your breast shield can actually affect how well your output of milk is? If not, neither did I. When I came across this bit of information I was a little hesitant. But as I read on, I became more interested.
If you have read any of my other posts, you know that I had trouble with my milk supply. Getting my daughter to latch was another thing. Since we had so much trouble with her latch, I decided to exclusively pump until my nipples could heal.
While pumping, I could see exactly how much I was getting. Now granted, nursing does remove more milk than pumping does, but I did not know this at the time. We were going bottle to bottle with no extras. I was terrified that I would have to quit breastfeeding so I started surfing the web for any and every bit of information that I could find.
I tried a variety of milk boosters which helped tremendously, but I wanted to try more. I came across a topic that included breast shields and milk supply.
The picture that I saw next really surprised me. These shields looked so strange! They were a funnel shape but angled at almost 90 degrees. Not only were they shaped differently, but they were also made out of silicone! I didn’t even know they could do that!
To much of my surprise, these new shields were suppose to help remove more milk than other traditional shields. I decided to give them a go.
Ladies, these shields are marvelous! The name says it all, Pumpin’ Pals, because they will truly become your pals! I will say they were very awkward at first. The sizing for one is a little different. It does not follow the standard “mm” sizing. I had trouble deciding which size worked best for me, but the owner of the company sent me different sizes at no charge! You don’t get that kind of costumer service much any more. I actually use a smaller size with Pumpin’ Pals than my Medela shields.
The size that I use in the Pumpin’ Pals is made of silicone. I was very excited about this! The silicone helps maintain a great suction and helps mimic the way your baby nurses. With the silicone, there is no need for lubrication. The manufacturer actually recommends not using it because it can affect the way the silicone suctions to your breasts.
Pumpin’ Pals also claim to help reduce the risk of getting mastitis and clogged milk ducts. The downward funnel shape of the shields help fight against the clogs. There is also no need to massage while pumping.
Another great reason to use Pumpin’ Pals is that you can lean back while pumping! How nice is that! You can actually “relax” instead of sitting up straight or even leaning forward.
Pumpin’ Pals is a great alternative to the standard breast shields. Give them a try. They are worth it! Please feel free to comment below. AS ALWAYS, YOU’VE GOT THIS MAMA!
